Just for fun. I'll put answers in comments. Difficulty varies, these aren't in any particular order.
1) What is the Elvish word for "friend" and when is it spoken in the story?
2) Who is the son of Ecthelion?
3) What's the name of the river that flows between the Argonath monuments?
4) What is the name of the artifact Galadriel gives to Frodo?
5) What is the name of the sword that cut the ring from Sauron's hand?

Answers to the trivia questions from the previous post are here. I got these right, but I claim the benefit of having re-read the trilogy a couple of years ago and watching the movies over and over for the past couple of years. Plus, I played a lot of Angband in my day, so I know a lot of Tolkien's vocabulary. :)
1) Mellon, to enter the mines of Moria
2) Denethor
3) Anduin
4) Star of Elendil
5) Narsil
1) I knew it was to enter the mines of Moria, but had forgotten the word.
2) Didn't know.
3) Anduin.
4) vial of light thingy, had forgetten name.
5) Forgotten.
I've recently re-read the series, listened to the BBC radio version on mp3, and watched the movies, but don't remember stuff like this. It's hard enough to remember statistics from obscure Husky football games from 20 years ago as it is.
Posted by: Humbaba on January 12, 2005 05:18 PMI'm almost certain that Observer's answer to (4) isn't quite right. The star-glass (which is what I recall it being called by Sam, I think, in Cirith Ungol) contains light from the Star of Elendil (which is the one Silmaril that Beren and Luthien pried out of the Iron Crown), but the Star itself is not in Middle-Earth.
Posted by: Feff on January 12, 2005 11:59 PMAlso, I think that a possible correct response is "Which one?" ... there was more than one Ecthelion in the history in Middle-Earth, at least two of which were Men and one of which was an Elf. I think you have to drag into the Silmarillion to find that last, though.
Posted by: Feff on January 13, 2005 12:05 AMAs we all bow to the Tolkien master. :) I was only asking about LOTR characters, so I think Denethor was the only possibility. As for the Star of Elendil. I have seen it also called the Phial of Galadriel, and the phial contains the light of the star. As for the other stuff, I don't know enough of the history of Morgoth, Angband, the Silmarils, etc. to compete.
Posted by: Observer on January 13, 2005 10:05 AMIt was the light of Elendil
Posted by: Liv on February 3, 2005 11:23 AMThese were easy trivia questions, and I came up with these answers:
1. mellon
2. Denethor
3. Anduin
4. Light of Elendil
5. Sword of Narsil (later known as Andúril)
i believe the answer to number 4 needs to change from Elendil to Earendil. the phial contained the light essence from the silmaril in the sky. thus it cannot be elendil who was born after the story fo the silmarils was completed.
